Anchorage 3-Year Outlook is brighter than we imagined

Yesterday’s sold-out live event for the Anchorage Economic Development Council’s 2022 3-Year Economic Forecast was a wonderful collection of real-time updates from the University of Alaska Anchorage and the whole U of A system, a report by Anchorage Mayor Bronson on his improvements for Anchorage, like procuring funds to support local business ventures and improving vital transportation hubs, including the $200M Port of Alaska investment that has been approved and being implemented, and supporting the success of our cargo airport, which is the 4th busiest cargo airport in the world. And Bill Popp, the AEDC President, also announced that Anchorage was recently considered the #23 most livable city out of 2300 mid-sized cities of in America by Liviability.com. Tourism is booming and bringing tons of people into Anchorage and our whole state.

So what’s the problem?

People are leaving the state and we aren’t replacing them. Boomers are retiring and we don’t have enough folks to refill their positions. And we need better healthcare with a lot more people recruited to come live and work here. Currently there are 6000 job openings in Anchorage health care, and not enough qualified persons to fill the need. For a full report on the employment outlook and trends, read: 2022 3-Year Economic Outlook Report

Also thanks to Jody and Debra from Barrett and Associates who were able to join Josh, Jessica and myself yesterday for the presentation. We all walked away enlightened engaged about Anchorage’s prospects for the next three years.
